How to paint an oak cabinet
Before starting the painting process, remember to choose what kind of paint to use. Getting a natural color requires help from varnish and wood stain. Not just varnish and wood stain can be chosen.
The paint product you should use is varnish. This paint is a paint that consists of four products, namely wood filler, wood stain, and also clear coat or varnish. These three products are specially designed for beginners to be able to paint with a brush.
This paint is a water-based wood paint that can produce a transparent finish without any discoloration effects such as yellowing. So you no longer need to worry about the color changing finishing results.
Entering the finishing process, you need to prepare the cabinet in advance. Move the cabinet to the area for painting. Remove any attached hardware, if you have trouble you can seal it tightly.
Clean the old coat of paint using a thinner or special paint remover. Follow the directions on the packaging so you will get the correct process. If the paint layer has been removed, the oak wood material is ready for refinishing.
Following are the steps for applying water-based varnish wood paint with a brush and water;
- Sand the surface of the cabinet with sandpaper.
Clean the remains of the paint that is not clean.
Use a coarse sandpaper number 150 until the surface becomes smooth and finally use 220 sandpaper.
- Dilute the oak wood filler varnish with a little water.
Wipe the wood filler with a cloth in the opposite direction of the fibers.
Let it dry and continue with sanding until the color and grain of the wood are visible.
Use sandpaper number 240.
- Dissolve the wood stain varnish according to the color of the oak cabinets with water.
Dissolve to get a viscosity of 11-12 seconds NK2.
Brush the paint all over the cabinet in the direction of the wood grain.
Wait for a new dry layer on the threshold sandpaper with 400 sandpaper.
You can apply a wood stain repeatedly until you get the desired color.
- Dissolve clear coat varnish with water to get a viscosity of 11-12 seconds NK2.
Continue with the grinding process in the direction of the wood grain.
If you have let the wooden cabinet sit overnight.
There are a few things you should keep in mind when working with varnishes;
- The first is not to dry the paint coat either wet or dry.
The drying process is sufficient to do in a room with good air circulation.
- The second type of brush to use is a clean, new brush with nylon bristles.
A brush that uses natural bristles actually hardens easily when exposed to water.
You can also use a foam brush but it is quite wasteful because the foam breaks down more quickly.
- Third, all finishing processes must be carried out in a clean, dust-free room.
Make sure you use a mask especially in the sanding process.
Wood powder is very dangerous for health.
